Back to Bali

After some long drives and ferry rides we got back to Bali from Lombok and Sumbawa just in time for some light wind and incoming swell.

I drove the boys to Sanur, so they would be close to rights on the east side of Bali that are generally only good during the wet season, or when the wind is light during the dry season.  We lucked out and scored some really good waves before the crowd (and wind) got on it.

After a few days on the Sanur side, the wind picked up again, so the boys opted to surf Uluwatu and the other spots on the Bukit Peninsula.  Aside from surfing, there are some really nice scenic areas around the Uluwatu Temple.

The swell really picked up too.  Big enough for spots like Padang Padang, Outside Corner Uluwatu, and Impossibles to really work.

Sumbawa Mission

After Lombok, it was off to Sumbawa.  With the incoming big swell, I originally planned to take the boys to the west coast to surf Super Suck, Scar Reef, Yo-Yo's, and the other spots in that area.  We heard rumors of labor protests at the Batu Hijau Copper-Gold Mine at the time and possible violence, so we headed over to the Lakey Peak area instead, which is a bit farther away.  The road was okay for the most part, and although there were some rough patches, I got the boys to Huu just fine.

We got there just as a new swell was hitting and they got to surf some really good Lakey Peak, Periscopes, and Nungas.

We also went down the coast to check out the Cobblestones area.

Luckily though, during the time we were in Lakai, the Sumbawa government began repaving one of those bad stretches of road, so hopefully next time I head back to Lakai Peak it's all smooth sailing.

Overland Trip to Lombok

I recently took some friends overland to Lombok via ferry.  I have lots of family and friends in Padangbai, Bali, so we avoided paying the huge bribe non-Balinese usually have to cough up before getting into the port.  We were also able to get on the new ferry, which got us to Lembar, Lombok in less than four hours.

This new Lombok ferry even had a nice air conditioned sleeping area I knew about, so we bunked up after purchasing, and devouring some Pop Mie.

I set the boys up in Kuta Lombok as a base camp and drove them to the major dry season surf spots.  Although it was a little too small for Desert Point, there was still plenty of swell and light wind, so they were able to score really good Mawi, Gerupuk, and Ekas.

Although the wet season spots such as Air Guling and Segar weren't really happening, I kept the boys well-hydrated with Bintangs -- the view looking back to Kuta Lombok from Segar Beach wasn't bad either.

Bali Adventure

I recently provided transport services for some Hawaii friends to Balian and Medewi for a change of scenery.  There wasn't much swell, but there were still some fun waves.

After a couple days, the swell came up so it was back to the Bukit Peninsula to check out Balangan, Bingin, Impossibles, Uluwatu, Padang, etc.

We also went searching for waves on the east side of the island, but the wind picked up early, so after having some breakfast while watching the sunrise we shot it over to the other side of the island to surf Airport Rights, Airport Lefts, and Kuta Reef...all in a morning's drive.
